1 STARTUP STORIES Notes from Founders: Sendy Nairobi Malindi Nakuru Eldoret Garissa Making life easier for small businesses in Kenya 'I'll tell you why sending packages isn't easy in Africa' So before Sendy was around, there were basically three ways to deliver goods: an expensive service like FedEx or DHL, your own drivers or the informal market. And the informal market is crazy. It's basically people who sit on the side of the road with vehicles, so you go up to them and negotiate a rate. If you like that driver, you save their number. You end up building a long list in your phone book of drivers you trust, as they all work in different neighborhoods. The problem is you can't really depend on their timing. They say they'll be there in five minutes and it takes 45, so you wait and wait and wait. You have no idea where they are or what they're doing. So it's a frustrating and time-consuming process. In most countries, sending a parcel to a customer is a straightforward process. In Kenya however, that's often not the case as packages are hard to track, take forever and aren't delivered door-to-door - causing considerable problems for small businesses. After operating on a tiny budget for its first couple of years, Sendy secured $2 million in investor funding in 2017 and now oversees thousands of deliveries every day. KENYA Malaika Judd isn't afraid to take risks. She left a promising career at a venture capital firm to help build Sendy back in 2015. At the time, the startup was still taking its baby steps, but it had very big ambitions. Sendy wanted to revolutionize parcel delivery in Kenya by connecting drivers and small businesses. The American-born Malaika is now Sendy's Chief Operations Officer and lives near their head-office in Nairobi. Malaika Judd COO of Sendy
