16 STARTUP STORIES Notes from Founders: Babylon Health Transforming healthcare across the globe 'You can lose everything and still be OK' I was a middle-class kid growing up in a loving family when the Iranian revolution destabilized the whole country. I ended up cut off from everything and had to learn to stand on my own two feet. It taught me that you can lose everything and still be OK. Looking back, I don't feel I did anything special. I was just incredibly lucky to go through that experience when I was still young enough for it to shape me. London-based Babylon Health is tearing up the rule book when it comes to the $10 trillion global healthcare market. The app uses a clever combination of cutting-edge AI and human expertise. Members can use their smartphone to access AI-powered clinical assistance and consult a qualified doctor by video consultation at any time of the day or night. Medication can then be sent to a patient's home or workplace, or collected from a local pharmacy and doctors can refer patients to specialists. In just four years, Babylon Health has attracted more than 2.6 million users worldwide. Eighteen months ago it was valued at £200 million ($280 million) and is expected to be worth significantly more today. As founder and chief executive of Babylon Health, Ali Parsa is harnessing technology to transform healthcare across the world's richest and poorest nations. Ali is no stranger to upheaval, having arrived in the UK as a 16-year-old refugee, fleeing the Iranian revolution of 1982. He now lives in London with his wife and three children. Babylon Health launched in 2014 and is Ali's third startup. Ali Parsa Founder of Babylon Health
