Meet Adil, Big Data Consultant, Professional Services

Adil is a Big Data Consultant working in the AWS Professional Services team based in Stockholm. He joined AWS in June 2019.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Adil: I embarked on my professional career with a leading data and analytics company in Pakistan in 2010. After a year, I got the opportunity to move to Sweden’s west coast for an international assignment. I spent almost five years in Gothenburg working on various professional services assignments for data warehouse and data lake projects. In 2015, I was locally employed, by the same employer, as a Solution Architect in Sweden. Last year, I joined the AWS Professional Services team as a Big Data Consultant and moved to Stockholm. It has been an exciting journey working with our Start-up and Enterprise customers and exploring Stockholm with my family and friends.

HereAtAWS:Can you explain your role; who your customers are, and how you help them?

Adil: I am part of the AWS Professional services team. As a team we facilitate our Customers and Partners in reaching their business goals. My focus area is Data and Analytics, where I help my customers in accelerating their journey to become data-driven enterprises through innovative use of the AWS platform.

HereAtAWS:What skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Adil: For me the key skills are a good understanding of data management for building performant data solutions and better analytics. And, experience in building solutions using one or more data and analytics capabilities such as big data processing frameworks, data warehousing and data lakes using supporting implementation technologies.

At AWS, we have a powerful concept of working backwards, which allows us to develop an understanding of the required steps that help our customers in the attainment of their goals effectively. It is extremely important for us to keep our focus on customers' business outcomes during the entire process.

HereAtAWS:Have you had to learn any specific new skills for your role?

Adil: Reflecting back on my one-year journey with AWS, I get amazed with the learning and growth. Some of the areas I developed new skills include serverless data lakes, NoSQL data modelling and workload design, and optimisation for columnar data stores.

I observed that a good understanding of cloud foundations and cloud operating models is essential in helping customers unlock the full potential of cloud, regardless of one's area of specialisation.

HereAtAWS:How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?

Adil: The impact of data driven decision-making touches every aspect of our society. In my observation, cloud is the best thing that has happened to analytics as it helps in making the best data analytics tools accessible to the masses.

As part of my work, my team and I are helping our customers in accelerating their strategic data initiatives using AWS analytics services. This involves organizing, deploying and analysing an organization’s information assets for smarter decision making and superior business outcomes.

A few highlights are speeding up manufacturing and delivery of useful drugs, making next generation financial services accessible to more people, and helping start-ups in innovation and growth.

HereAtAWS:At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?

Adil: At AWS we have various platforms for learning and collaboration. I am part of the Technical Field Community (TFC) for Analytics which is a community made up of data and analytics experts from the AWS Global team with a goal of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and mentoring.

HereAtAWS:What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Adil: Working with diverse and challenging customer problems, diving deep to understand the customer business outcomes, and shaping optimum solutions using the best cloud technology in the industry.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Adil: Staying laser-focused in an environment full of learning, collaboration and innovation!

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Adil: It’s rare that one gets the opportunity to own, lead and shape the future. At AWS, you have the opportunity to make a real impact on businesses and society. Every day is a learning opportunity, and the diverse AWS culture is a source of inspiration, collaboration and knowledge.

HereAtAWS:What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Adil: Inspiring, Diverse, Innovative.
