Anantha joined AWS in 2020 as a Cloud Support Engineer based in Dublin, Ireland.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Anantha: I studied BTech in Information Technology in India. After completing my studies, I joined a startup company as a Technical Support Engineer for hosting companies, where I was able to grow and learn new things from scratch. I had spent nearly 3.5 years working there, progressing through the company. Later, I migrated to Banaglore, where I worked for an International company as Linux Server Administrator. I then moved to another company in Bangalore as a Technical Operation Engineer and this is where I first came into contact with AWS and was able to explore the services.
I contacted AWS support if we ever faced any issue with any service. One morning I was thinking “Why can’t I be one of the AWS engineers assisting the customers around the globe?” and then I started to answer my own question.
I began to learn new services, and one day I saw that there was a drive for the AWS Premium Support team in their Dublin location. Initially I felt I had no hope that I would be able to make it, but I took it as a challenge to compete with many other engineers. I finally completed my interviews successfully and after a week, I got the great news that I was selected. I was really happy to relocate to Dublin from India. I joined AWS on 23rd March 2020 as a Cloud Support Engineer in the Analytics profile.
From that day one at AWS, I keep developing new skills and learning new things. I love assisting our customers around the globe. I feel privileged that my dream about becoming an AWS engineer came true. It has helped me to further develop my skills and knowledge about AWS services – something that one day may help me to switch to a new role within AWS itself….but that is still in future.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Anantha: My customers are typically existing customers using the AWS platform or that are in the process of migrating to “the cloud” using AWS. As a Cloud Support Engineer, I assist tech-savvy, strong and agile technological companies. In my role, I work with technical employees in positions ranging from top leaders to the developers and DevOps that are doing hands-on work on our system.
In my role, I support the Enterprise, Business and Developer customers for many of the Analytics services via the chat, calls and email. I really love assisting customers and finding a solution to their problem. I also help them design and select the best architecture based on their use case and providing the best practice recommendations, helping them grow and succeed in using AWS services.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Anantha: In my role, we need a balance of both soft and tech skills. To be a successful engineer, we need a very wide knowledge about different services in our profile along with strong understanding of customer use cases and also communication and interpersonal skills are equally important.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?
Anantha: The biggest skills you will need are curiosity and readiness to help customers. At AWS you have to be happy to continuously learn new things and also try to find ways to apply that knowledge.
HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?
Anantha: Our customers are some of the biggest technological companies in the world, who use AWS services to manage their infrastructure. Helping the customers build their digital solutions, while at the same time helping them reach their goals makes me happy. I am always happy to hear from them that my solutions helped their business to grow and scale.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Anantha: Helping our customers and seeing their happy faces!
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Anantha: Be curious to learn new skills each day, be ready to assist the different kinds of customers around the globe, and help them grow along with you. You have access to the most innovative people and teams with huge experience and lots of resources and technology, so roll up your sleeves and start building the future with AWS.
