Meet Anthony, Senior Solutions Architect

Anthony is a Senior Solutions Architect based in Geneva, Switzerland. He joined AWS in March, 2020.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Anthony: Directly before joining AWS, I cofounded a start-up as the CTO in Geneva, Switzerland. Prior to that I ran a digital agency in Geneva for a few years. Before coming to Switzerland, I spent 15 years in the US, working for a variety of start-ups in roles ranging from developer to VP of Engineering.

I was looking to move away from management (at least for a while) and go back to a more technical, hands-on role, and the AWS Solutions Architect role was a perfect match for me.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Anthony: As a Solutions Architect, my role is to support my enterprise customer so that they get the most out of the cloud using AWS.

HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Anthony: A broad overall technical background, deep curiosity, a can-do attitude and a strong client orientation is required.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (either technical or soft) for your role?

Anthony: My knowledge of AWS services was quite shallow when I joined. I had to rapidly dive into the broad suite of AWS services, what they are, what they do, how to use them and in what situations. My client being an advanced user of AWS puts the bar quite high for me in my role in subjects as broad as IoT, ML and MS Windows on AWS.

HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?

Anthony: I love the fact that I help customers get access to incredibly powerful services they can use to improve their business. For example, I was able to help a former co-worker and a start-up builder leverage AWS to monitor the well-being of animals through a mix of physical sensors, IoT, video and ML.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Anthony: I get to learn about cutting edge technology every day. There’s not a day goes by that I don’t learn something new. Also, I love the Amazon Leadership Principles, that everyone lives and breathes at AWS, it makes interactions with anyone at AWS so much more fluid.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Anthony: Be prepared to learn! Change is the norm, there are no dull moments here.

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Anthony: Short, challenging, exhilarating.

HereAtAWS: Do you have any needs or commitment that require flexibility in your role?

Anthony: I joined AWS during the COVID-19 phase. Therefore, I have been working from home for the last 4 months. I was hired through video-conferencing and I have only met a few of my colleagues in real life. This is quite unique as, although I miss working in an office with my co-workers, I have been able to work and bond with the team remotely.

HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?

Anthony: Recently, I have been playing with my love of geographical data and my new 3D printer to try to print a 3D version of my neighbourhood! In my free time, I have been rebuilding a chalet in the alps with my partner, and I hope it will be completed by Christmas to host a big family gathering.
