Meet Antonia, Data Scientist

Antonia is a Data Scientist based in Berlin, Germany. She joined AWS in January 2020.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Antonia: After finishing my Master’s degree in Business Analytics and Big Data in Spain, I relocated to Luxembourg to intern as a Data Scientist for five months at Amazon Operations. Having had a sneak preview on how Machine Learning is driving Amazon, I decided to pursue my career as a Data Scientist at AWS in my home town of Berlin.

HereAtAWS:Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Antonia: As a diverse and global team, we help customers to accelerate the adoption of Machine Learning and Deep Learning to generate value out of their Big Data. In recent projects, I have beein involved in helping customers tackle over or under-stocking by predicting sales more accurately, driven object detection in the retail industry to automate compliance management and, most recently, helped the World Health Organisation during the Covid-19 pandemic.

HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Antonia: Understanding a variety of businesses in different industries and how ML can help them to become more efficient, grow faster or understand their customers better. A big chunk of that is translating business and management problems into Machine Learning problems and then identifying how to measure the success and impact of ML.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills for your role?

Antonia: Machine Learning is still a vivid and evolving field of science – studying and dedicating time to educate myself on hot topics and trends during my working hours is something I do on a daily basis. Beside the technical skillset, I did learn a lot on how to communicate Machine Learning on different levels such as C-Level, Business Analyst or Data Scientist.

HereAtAWS:How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?

Antonia: Within our team we have a special program so called “AI for good” where we dedicate our time to social or environmental projects such as analysing satellite data to enable companies to react faster to disasters like wild fires, or delivering vaccines to villages in Africa.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Antonia: That I have impact and I shape the success of global players no matter what industry they are in and every company has a different use case - so every day is Day 1 for me!

HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?

Antonia: Together with my boyfriend I am working on building spectacles made from horn with CNC machines. We are still in the starting shoes but having Machine Learning identify the contours of a customer’s face and personalise the frame accordingly is our ultimate goal.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Antonia: Take advantage of the on-boarding period – the only thing expected from you is to “Learn and be curious” and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to dive deep into AWS Science!

HereAtAWS:What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Antonia: Peculiar, insightful, fun!
