Meet Daniel, Cloud Infrastructure Architect

Daniel is a Cloud Infrastructure Architect based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He joined AWS in October 2019.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Daniel: I come from a technical background where I have worked with numerous technologies within the Information Technology (IT) landscape. This has fostered a passion for technology and how technology can align with and be adopted by business enterprises. I have worked in industries that range from public sector, telecommunications, multimedia and financial services.

A combination of exposure, curiosity and an enterprising attitude have resulted in me gaining experience in the following technology fields; Cloud Computing, Business Analytics, Optimization, Integration, Application Development Lifecycle Management and DevOps. I have a keen interest in systems architecture and analysis and this has brought great depth to my current role as Cloud Infrastructure Architect.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Daniel: My role involves me solving customer problems by providing architectural blue prints as solutions to their problems and the underlying infrastructure as code that supports the architecture.

HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Daniel: You need to be an active listener, analytical, logical thinker and a natural problem solver.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?

Daniel: CloudFormation, Terraform and the AWS services. Leadership skills too as this role expanded on my ability to lead a team.

HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?

Daniel: My work with customers helps them provide financial services solutions to meet their customers’ current and future needs based on leading edge technology.

HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?

Daniel: I am part of the Amazon’s Black Employee Network (BEN). BEN’s mission is to recruit, retain, and empower Black employees by connecting members with mentors and provides career and personal development workshops.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Daniel: Listening to the voice of our customer and understanding the unique challenges that they have.
