Doreen joined AWS in July 2020 as an Account Executive Enterprise based in Munich, Germany.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Doreen: Previously, I worked at a data management company. My role was that of an Inside Sales Representative with my own quota. My customers were public sector clients. I worked there for a total of just under eight years in various roles. Even before I had my daughter in 2018, I was looking for a new role internally. My goal was account management with customers in the free economy who are in the process of digitization. No interesting position arose internally for me, so for the first time ever in my career, I applied myself to a company of my choice. (I've always previously come into roles via referrals). I only applied because I realised that there was only one company for me that combined everything that was important to me, and where I could imagine that there would be an environment where I could learn and grow. A company that is innovative, exciting, dynamic and agile. AWS!
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Doreen: I am a quota carrying, full sales cycle owning Account team member. It is an overlay model, meaning I am an additive sales resource covering known accounts. My goal is to broaden the account and to allow my customers to grow successfully both with, and in, the cloud. I would like to help my customers transfer existing business areas into the digital age and to find and establish new business areas with all the advantages the cloud has to offer.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Doreen: I would say that it is helpful to have a certain technical affinity - this makes it easier to get started. In a rapidly evolving technical world, bringing a natural interest in new technologies helps. Otherwise, you should be able to listen, be able to adapt to other people and most importantly, you should be proactive. If you bring a certain amount of creativity, you have everything it takes to become customer-obsessed.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?
Doreen: I changed the way I work with customers. The working backwards approach is like a revelation for me. I can take the time to concentrate on my client, do intensive research before talking to them. Showing the customer that I understand the peculiarities of their industry is very beneficial for the customer's trust. I no longer sell products to the customer, but I come up with solutions for real problems they haven’t addressed so far but are trying to solve.
HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?
Doreen: My customer is a leading logistics companies. They support the worldwide distribution of vaccination doses through an international supply chain, based in Europe. This includes distribution to markets in Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa, and parts of the Americas. My customer is committed to offering environmentally friendly and sustainable supply chain solutions.
HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?
Doreen: I am part of the sustainability ambassadors. Subject Matter Expert for Enterprise Migrations and Field Enablement for our Inside Sales community. I have also signed up for a mentorship at ReDI School of Digital Innovation.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Doreen: It’s the whole working environment, the culture! I never felt like a new hire in the beginning because everyone seems to have a very similar work ethic like myself. I like the dynamic, inspiring atmosphere. I finally have the freedom to develop and test my ideas and I feel like I can really change things.
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Doreen: Take advantage of the opportunities that are offered to you. Do not be afraid to make mistakes and do not compare yourself with others. Our team includes people from many different industries with different conditions - everyone brings different cards and together we complete.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
