Meet Fabian, Solutions Architect Team Lead

Fabian is a Solutions Architect Team Lead based in Munich. He joined AWS in April 2018.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Fabian: I started my career at the age of 15, training as an industrial mechanic close to my home town. During this training I decided that I would really like to turn my hobby (computers and programming) into my career, so I did my university entrance qualification and started a dual study in business informatics with the Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt.

After this I stayed at Deutsche Bank for one more year as a technical engineer and worked on a project where I liked to use AWS Services. Due to this fact I had multiple meetings with AWS and experienced first-hand both the products and the working culture, and I loved it!

I also launched my startup Corelike on the side where I was using AWS, and so I just became more and more interested in a career with AWS. Eventually, I decided to apply for a job as a Solutions Architect. I had never worked as an architect before or had a customer-facing role. So, I started studying harder than I ever have. In that first three months during the on-boarding as an Associate Solutions Architect I must have learned even more than in my whole dual study program.

Now, just over two years later, I work with my customers, enjoy the phenomenal culture, manage a team of fellow SAs and never loved my job more. I also relocated to the beautiful city of Munich for my transition to AWS.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Fabian: As a Solutions Architect I work closely together with our customers to help them get the most out of our platform. In addition, I also give talks and publish content to share as much information as possible with our customers so that they can further leverage AWS to provide even better services to their customers. In my role as a Team Lead, I’m also focused on my team, coaching and supporting them so that they can develop themselves even further.

HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Fabian: As a Solutions Architect you need to have a high interest in tech and a good understanding of the technical concepts and how things work together. It is also crucial that you are curious and happy to learn something new every day. Besides that, you need also to be customer obsessed and have good communication skills so that you can offer the best experience and advice to your customers.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?

Fabian: Yes, in the beginning I had to learn a lot more of the AWS services and also to dive even deeper into multiple technical concepts and implementations. This was a big part of the on-boarding, but even after the on-boarding there are always opportunities to learn more. For instance, I have had to learn totally new skills such as interviewing new candidates for AWS.

HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?

Fabian: There are countless ways. For example, during the beginning of COVID-19 we had a lot of initiatives where both AWS and Amazon helped, and we were encouraged to lend support to any of them. I myself did a Hackerschool session with a fellow SA to teach school kids (who were being home-schooled at this time) how to start programming. We also help startups so that they can bring their ideas quickly and cost-effectively to their customers. For example I supported the Münchner Tafel once with packing school bags for new school starters where Amazon sponsored the bags and the starting equipment. I also teach at the Hochschule Munich in my spare time to teach more people tech and show them how powerful it is.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Fabian: Have a detailed look for the customer obsession, learn & be curious and ownership Leadership Principles. These are the ones that resonate with me in my role the most (though they are all important). If you identify with those principles then you know you are already on the right track.

HereAtAWS:What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Fabian: Exciting, challenging and motivating.

HereAtAWS:Do you have any needs or commitment that require flexibility in your role?

Fabian: Yes! Next to my full-time role I have a startup, I teach at the Hochschule München, I’m active as a volunteer firefighter and I also have a dog!

HereAtAWS:What do you love to do outside work?

Fabian: I love to spend time with my family and friends and interacting with others in general. When alone, I enjoy a long ride on my motorcycle or going scuba diving. I’m also an active volunteer firefighter and when I have time left at the end of the day, I like to further improve my smart home applications.

HereAtAWS: Is there anything else you would like to add about your personal journey?

Fabian: You don’t need to go the direct way. You can go whatever way you want to achieve your goals and dreams as long as you have fun on the way and follow your passion when it calls!
