Felipe joined AWS in 2019 as a Cloud Architect, and is based in Dublin, Ireland.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Felipe: I moved from Brazil to work for AWS. I was working as a Solutions Architect for a large Consumer Packaged Goods firm when the opportunity came. I always wanted to have the experience of living abroad while working for a tech company, but I never thought it would be for AWS.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Felipe: My role is to support big corporations in migrating their workload to AWS, but more specific to the AWS Managed Services. I guide them both from a technical and architectural perspective.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Felipe: As this is a customer-facing role, it is important to be able to communicate well, even if this is not your primary language. Listening to customers’ needs and helping them to translate those needs into solutions is key. Having a technical background, especially from a traditional data center culture, helps me understand the customer needs to guide them through their cloud journey.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?
Felipe: I had to learn AWS. I was working with a different provider previously, which gave me a good understanding of the cloud, but navigating through the AWS world of features and learning them was an amazing journey.
HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?
Felipe: I guess the best part is to influence the people I work with to be curious and think outside the box, but also help their companies to achieve their goals, migrate to AWS and eventually support their end-customers and communities.
HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?
Felipe: I help as a mentor for aspiring Cloud Architects and anyone looking for guidance. I am also a part of the Latinos@Amazon affinity group.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Felipe: Seeing discussion becoming solutions and actionable items. In other words, seeing customers happy with their apps up and running
HereAtAWS: What initially interested you in working for AWS?
Felipe: The ground breaking technologies that launch so frequently. Being able to be part of that, and contribute to it, is amazing.
HereAtAWS: What were you excited to see AWS working on when you first got here?
Felipe: The ability to reach out to anyone for help. Most people are willing to help and contribute to your growth.
HereAtAWS: What products or solutions have you worked on? What have been your favourites and why?
Felipe: Pretty much a bit of everything! Customers tend to want to test everything so I have to know how it works. Managed Services offering, networking and Control Tower are my favourites
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Felipe: Be open to a cultural change. Be open to learn new things everyday day. Remember it is always day one.
HereAtAWS: Is there anything else you would like to add about your personal journey?
Felipe: AWS gave me an opportunity to live abroad, to learn new things everyday but also to provide to my family an amazing experience, to open our minds to a global view which changed our lives.
