Geetha is an Employer Brand Intern based in London, United Kingdom. She joined AWS in August 2020.
HereAtAWS: What made you apply for an Internship at AWS?
Geetha: I have always been passionate about creative, tech-driven industries, and curious to learn something new every day. My journey has been exciting and has led me across various locations such as Sri Lanka, Singapore and the UK. I have spent the last four years completing my undergraduate and postgraduate degree majoring in Digital Marketing and Branding at Nottingham Trent University. In addition, building my professional experience alongside different teams such as editorial, digital, creative, public relations & marketing communication. As a part of the final semester of my Master’s Degree, I joined the AWS Employer Branding team for my work experience placement. It was an opportunity to work with one of the biggest tech companies in the world and have a global impact at scale.
HereAtAWS: What makes being an intern at AWS different from anywhere else?
Geetha: Working at AWS provides me endless opportunities for personal development and growth. I was virtually on-boarded due to COVID-19; I had the flexibility of working from home but also staying connected and engaging with different teams from around the world, learning about different cultures and how people make decisions based on their insights.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role?
Geetha: In my role, I support campaign planning, content creation, asset management, reporting and design. We dive deep on quantitative and qualitative data to generate the right business and brand insights; tracking, optimising and reporting on campaign activity. We also support other teams in creative production and marketing internal and external events.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?
Geetha: In terms of technical skills – using Adobe Analytics to measure and analyse campaigns using specific metrics and data points. This information is key to creating and implementing effective campaigns.
Soft skills: Being able to prioritise the most important duties while adapting to situations when new requests come in. Also, being curious and staying up to date with strategic frameworks behind how AWS employer brand team works with such a diverse set of stakeholders.
HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?
Geetha: Yes! I am a sustainability ambassador and focus on initiatives that drives innovation, efficiency and business practices across Amazon. I am also a part of Women@Amazon and AWE (Amazon Women in Engineering) global affinity groups, which is a community for both business and technical employees interested in increasing gender diversity at Amazon. Their mission is to make Amazon the premier global destination for women. I recently took part in the WiFi Allies 21-Day Challenge, which is a series of short daily activities over three weeks, aimed at creating a habit of thinking about topics related to allyship and inclusion.
HereAtAWS: What is the most challenging part of your role as an Intern?
Geetha: Building strong professional bonds with my colleagues as we started working remotely. Even though I enjoy the flexibility, it is difficult to observe team member’s methods and ideas. My team has adapted quickly and started organising virtual team offsites, and other virtual events have helped me stay connected with the wider business.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Geetha: Exhilarative, intriguing and collaborative.
HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?
Geetha: I think I’ve always danced my way through life and tried to explore something new to become a well-rounded person and picking up new hobbies such as zentangle, reading Gillian Flynn’s books or strength training for Swimming. I hope to continue doing things that inspire me to keep thriving!
