Meet Hanane, Senior Security Strategist

Hanane joined AWS in 2021 as a Senior Security Strategist, and is based in Paris, France.

HereAtAWS: Hi Hanane, tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Hanane: I started my career in IT as a developer, project manager, PMO, and other. At one point I decided to change path in a new expertise area, which is cybersecurity. After few months of self-learning I joined a consulting firm to help companies defining and implementing security governance. After few years, I moved to a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) role where I experienced how on-prem environments are vulnerable to cyberattacks and I was advocating for a move-to-cloud.

Today, through my role at AWS, I am happy to help customers remove blockers to their cloud adoption and educate them on the benefits of the AWS Cloud in terms of security and compliance.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Hanane: As security strategist, I lead discussions with public sector customers across France, Italy and Iberia, on security and compliance matters. I advise CxOs on their cybersecurity strategies, risks mitigation, and compliance journey to accelerate their adoption of the AWS Cloud.

HereAtAWS: What kind of skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Hanane: Technical cybersecurity knowledge combined with good understanding of laws, regulations, and frameworks applicable to our customers are necessary to lead effective discussions on these topics and provide the best help to customers. Each customer is unique and has specific needs and challenges, being able to understand them is essential for my role.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills for your role?

Hanane: Definitely, I developed skills in different areas including AWS Cloud technology, compliance programs, cloud security frameworks, and data privacy. At AWS, we are encouraged to learn and be curious on various topics, I take advantage of internal programs to develop my soft skills such as leadership, effective communication, and decision making.

HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?

Hanane: Helping customers adopt the AWS Cloud enables them to make the best use of technology to accelerate their digital transformation, growing their business and competitiveness. At country level, with post-pandemic times, this helps ensure economies emerge stronger, more resilient and prepared for future challenges.

For the public sector, the AWS Cloud enables the digital modernization and resilience for governments and other public services. Which also benefits to citizens making their life easier through digitized and sophisticated services.

HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?

Hanane: Yes, I strongly adhere to AWS diversity and equity culture. Hence, I am part of affinity groups to promote inclusion.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Hanane: When I help customers overcome their security and compliance challenges. Public sector customers often still have security blockers to move to the cloud, but I really enjoy demonstrating how the AWS Cloud can help them improve their security posture in terms of cyber defence as well as resilience.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Hanane: Keep refreshing my knowledge in technologies as well as laws, regulations, and frameworks.

HereAtAWS: What initially interested you in working for AWS?

Hanane: I believe in the cloud becoming the new normal for computing. In addition to the strong leadership culture, AWS being the most dynamic and fast-growing cloud provider, leading so much ahead of other providers, is obviously the best place to work.

HereAtAWS: What were you excited to see AWS working on when you first got here?

Hanane: Amazon is known for its customer obsession and defined the new standard for customer service, I was excited to know what mechanisms AWS uses to stay connected with customers’ needs all over the world.

HereAtAWS: What products or solutions have you worked on? What have been your favourites and why?

Hanane: One of the services I most refer to in my discussions with customers is AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS) and how it helps them achieve security and compliance objectives. KMS offers a high level of protection to customer data, while it’s easy to use, cost-effective and natively integrated with other services.

HereAtAWS: What’s one of your greatest accomplishments since joining AWS?

Hanane: Develop trust with customers on sensitive topics.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Hanane: Take advantage of being at AWS to learn and be curious.

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Hanane: Learn, challenge, teamwork.

HereAtAWS: Do you have any needs or commitment that require flexibility in your role?

Hanane: As a mother of a young kid, I enjoy the flexibility of working from home and the autonomy I have to manage my own schedule.

HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?

Hanane: I am interested about cultures, traditions and beliefs, in particular the evolution of societies and human behaviour. I try to learn about these topics by reading and spontaneously by discussing with people from different social spheres, origins, and lifestyles.
