Meet Hans-Jürgen, Senior Enterprise Support Manager

Hans-Jürgen is a Senior Enterprise Support Manager based in Munich, Germany. He joined AWS in October 2020.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Hans-Jürgen: Before joining AWS, I was in an executive role at a start-up brand of an international company. The Business was an IT Service Delivery but in a managed services setup, so what you might define as “old style IT”. This is quite a big contrast to the way we in AWS are defining IT and the related services.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Hans-Jürgen: In my role here at AWS, I lead an organisation with teams of Technical Account Managers who support our premium AWS customers in both a pro-active as well as re-active manner. The reactive part is to help them getting their support cases solved quickly and sustainably. Sustainability is also the key word with regards to the pro-active part of our services. Here, we ensure our customers are reviewing their workloads, architecture and use profiles with us and our experts in order to improve effectiveness, efficiency, performance and cost. In case the customers have important events, we do proactively support them in order to get our services ready to manage with the new events. Events can be product launches, migrations or periods of high utilization of services like Super bowl, FIFA world cup final etc.

HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Hans-Jürgen: It’s multi-fold, but two topics are the most important. Technically, a good understanding of our AWS Services is required in order to connect both the customer and the AWS support and service teams. With regards to orchestrating AWS teams as well as customer teams, good communication skills are required as well. Helping our AWS customers to shape and execute a strategy for the broad use of Amazon Web Services is also a requirement.

HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?  

Hans-Jürgen: Well this work with our customers helps them to utilize our services, which in turn are more effective and efficient and therefore improve the environmental footprint the customers leave. In addition, the solutions our customers are inventing on the basis of AWS Services are delivering impact by themselves.  

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Hans-Jürgen: Understanding the broad range of opportunities AWS is offering to both our customers as well as to our employees. The fact that we have so many systematic ways of inventing and improving, as well as connecting everything we do to our Leadership Principles is fascinating. Connecting all this into solutions for our customers is the real magic. Another important aspect is the inclusion and diversity we are actively practicing, it gives you great pride to work for a company where this is such a big priority.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Hans-Jürgen: Have fun, stay calm and use the on-boarding time to get to know people, approaches, processes and services. Moreover, do not get scared by all the information available.

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Hans-Jürgen: Innovations, teamwork, inspiration.
