Harmeet is a Database Developer based in Gdansk, Poland. He joined AWS in February 2021.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Harmeet: I started my career as a Java developer, but having a curiosity about databases drove me to start exploring opportunities in this area. Having spent half of my career journey in a customer-facing role, helped me truly understand customer needs. I was based in the United Kingdom when I got an opportunity to be interviewed by AWS.
Looking at the job description of a Database Developer for migrating the database/application, a challenging job with lots of opportunities to learn, it sounded like a dream job. I had to relocate from the UK to Poland, but working for AWS was always my goal and Gdansk is a beautiful city.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Harmeet: I work as a Database Developer for Database Migration Accelerator (DMA), which provides customers a way to quickly migrate databases to AWS at fixed prices, without having to worry about the technical resources required for migrating.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Harmeet: Technical skills would include knowledge on more than one database along with PostGreSQL/MySQL. Additionally, having programming knowledge is an add-on as it will enable an Engineer to debug the code and find any issues.
Regarding soft skills, there is a concept I love about having an empty chair in meetings where the customer would sit. If the customer was sitting in that chair, what would be their reaction or decision potentially be? Customer-obsession and making the customer happy is what drives almost every decision.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Harmeet: At Amazon it is always Day One, so there is so much to learn about every day and so many new things that are always happening.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Harmeet: We have just started this team and we will learn more as and when we do more migrations. As of now, our focus will be on data validation and testing the migration. We want to deliver the migration as per customer need and for that we need to make sure that migration is successful.
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Harmeet: I would advise people to join AWS only if they can relate to the Leadership Principles, which are really, actually, 100% implemented when we work.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Harmeet: Ownership, Exciting and Challenging
