Hulisani is a Cloud Support Engineer based in Cape Town, South Africa. He joined AWS in October, 2019.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Hulisani: I grew up at Thohoyandou in Limpopo (Venda). I joined the working industry while completing my varsity modules, working as a Database intern dealing with MySQL server. While browsing for work on the internet for a change of scenery and with the eagerness to progress in the IT industry, I came across a video from AWS by an Engineer. I applied and got the role of a Cloud Support Graduate. I had to relocate from Johannesburg to Cape Town to fulfil the duties of my role, which was quite a huge life transition.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Hulisani: I work with customers worldwide. Under Storage and Content Delivery, I help customers with issues that relate to storing and analysing data. Mostly, I help customers who are migrating their data from On-prem to AWS Cloud for example, utilizing service like AWS Storage Gateway.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Hulisani: You must be eager to learn about new technology every second as the it evolves all the time, and you must have basic programming skills. Lastly, you must be a leader and take ownership of that you do.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?
Hulisani: I had to learn how most AWS Storage services (Storage Gateway, S3, CloudFront, SES etc) work and interact with other services both AWS provided and external. I also learnt how to make API calls using Boto core clients, Bash, AWS CLI etc.
HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?
Hulisani: We work with customers such as global streaming platforms, that leverage services like CloudFront to serve content closer to customers who are making requests around the world.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Hulisani: Solving different issues every day, every day feels like day one, indeed.
HereAtAWS: What initially interested you in working for AWS?
Hulisani: The advanced technology, career development and the potential of meeting Jeff Bezos!
HereAtAWS: What’s one of your greatest accomplishments since joining AWS?
Hulisani: The transition from Graduate to Associate, now working as an Engineer in a year and seven months.
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Hulisani: Be ready to evolve and do not come with the "I know it all" attitude, as you will be learning every second!
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Hulisani: Always Day One.
