Meet Ioanna, Software Development Engineer

Ioanna is a Software Development Engineer in the Amazon Redshift team at AWS, based in Berlin.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Ioanna: I was studying my PhD in Barcelona in the area of graph mining when an opportunity arose to take a six-month internship in the Amazon Redshift team at AWS in Berlin. After finishing the internship, I was convinced that Redshift would be the perfect place for me. I was so happy to receive the offer of a permanent role as a Software Developer in the Spatial team.

HereAtAWS: Can you tell us more about the Spatial team and their customers?

Ioanna: The Spatial team works on adding the spatial functionality to Amazon Redshift. Our customers are those who have spatial data that want to analyse, and my role is to provide them with the right tools to do so.

HereAtAWS: What skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Ioanna: A successful software engineer needs a deep understanding of the programming language that they use to be able to design algorithms and scalable software systems. But, above all else, they need to be eager to learn continuously and never stop envisioning the future directions of the systems that they design.

HereAtAWS: What's the most exciting part of your job?

Ioanna: Continuously learning and collaborating with the most amazing engineers and professionals.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Ioanna: Learn and be curious! Personal growth is an indispensable part of both the growth of the team, and the success of the product.

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Ioanna: Learn, collaborate, grow.
