Meet Jacopo, Data Science Intern

Jacopo is a Data Science intern based in Luxembourg.

HereAtAWS: Why did you apply for an Internship at AWS?

Jacopo: As an engineer, I have always been fascinated by cloud services, especially by the balance between simplicity of use and complexity of functionalities. Moreover, I have always wished to work in a stimulating, innovative, diverse and inclusive environment. AWS seemed to me the right place to satisfy my technological curiosity and pursuit of happiness.

HereAtAWS: How did you hear about AWS Internships?

Jacopo: I first heard about AWS Internships on LinkedIn, where I follow the most impactful and interesting companies and research groups. One day I read a brief interview of an Intern at AWS, which captured my attention so much so I spent the following hours reading other stories and looking for open positions.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of being an Intern at AWS?

Jacopo: Learning is the most exciting and satisfying part of being an Intern at AWS. During my Internship, I had the opportunity to learn about the cloud and the company values and goals, explore new technologies and methodologies, and experiment on highly impactful projects.

HereAtAWS: What makes being an intern at AWS different from anywhere else?

Jacopo: AWS values diversity. During my Internship I have always felt like my opinion was appreciated and highly valued. The great diversity of backgrounds, both technically and culturally, have allowed to combine diverse perspectives, blending fresh and experienced ones into great ideas.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Jacopo: I am a Data Scientist Intern, and, as such, I analyze the data collected by AWS to drive business and technical decisions. Specifically, I have been applying impact estimation techniques to gain insight into the usage of AWS services and products.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?

Jacopo: During my Internship at AWS, I learned how to use the cloud “from zero to hero!” Moreover, I learned about and applied causal inference techniques for my Internship project.  Being able to dive deep into research papers and innovative methodologies satisfies my never-ending curiosity about technology, computer science and statistics.

HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?

Jacopo: Through Amazon Mentoring I was able to get in touch with other Amazonians, share my passion for technology and make new friends all over the world!

HereAtAWS: What’s the most challenging part of your role?

Jacopo: As an Intern, I am actively supported by my team, who are always ready to help me out providing feedback on my work and collaborating with me. I believe the most challenging part of my role is understanding when to stop exploring for solutions and apply them to the problem that is to be solved.

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Jacopo: Surprising, enjoyable, inspiring.

HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?

Jacopo: Outside of work I really enjoy cooking, especially when I have guests over. I really love nature and exploring new places. I am also quite interested in political and social matters, and enjoy reading newspapers and discussing with friends.
