Meet Jennifer, Account Executive

Jennifer is an Account Executive for Start-ups based in Munich, Germany. She joined AWS in July 2020.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Jennifer:  While I was studying, I was really interested in tech and developing solutions, which is why one of my first work experiences was as a student research assistant for the Chair of Distributed Systems at the University of Passau, working with multiple industries.

My other passion is languages and start-ups – which is why I did a double degree in International Management for SMBs - working in Business Development, Marketing, Account Management and as a Country Manager covering different roles from business to product.

My first interaction with AWS was working at Reply – a strong partner of AWS – where I designed solutions to meet customer needs and goals as an IT consultant. When hearing about the Inside Sales offer, I was excited to bring my experience in understanding business and technological requirements to high-scale start-up customers within multiple industries. I also wanted to work for an innovative company with an entrepreneurial culture, and have the opportunity to be at the forefront of new technology and services.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Jennifer:  As an Account Executive for start-ups at AWS, I am my customer’s trusted advisor for all their business needs, linking their technical/business requirements to how AWS services can help achieve those goals. I am also the voice of our customers inside AWS, putting them in touch with the appropriate internal stakeholders to help them grow in their cloud journey.

HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Jennifer: Continuous learning and improvement are essential for my role, since start-ups are especially eager to try out new services. I constantly upgrade myself technically which helps me earn the trust of my customers and propose to them technically appropriate and scalable, cost-effective solutions. With regards to soft skills, constantly sharpening my communication/presentation skills for conversations with C-level executives and keeping updated on new sales approaches and data-driven insights enable me to perform at peak.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?

Jennifer:  A lot! From the technical side, I learnt a great deal about new AWS services, Machine Learning/Analytics technology to application development, which is what I would like to focus on further in the future. Also, from the business side, I gained more knowledge about customer behaviour and extracting insights from data in order to advise them on a day-to-day basis.  In addition, to my surprise, I discovered that public speaking is something that I truly enjoy.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Jennifer:  The thing that excites me the most is that there is no typical day at AWS.  Every day I get to work with different customer projects that I have not personally worked on before, which has made my learning curve grow exponentially. Moreover, the trust and flexibility placed in me to take decisions on my own following our two-way-door decision-making principle, allows me to experiment and innovate on behalf of my customers. Combining this with a dynamic, smart team of Amazonians that I interact with on a daily basis makes me get out of my comfort zone many times and learn something new every day.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Jennifer:  Once I joined AWS, I was hit by the rapid pace of things happening here, especially given that our team has been built from scratch at the beginning of 2020. Hence, the soft skills I have learnt during my time here so far have been adapting to ambiguous situations, diving deep for resources and being able to prioritize given the infinite opportunities available.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Jennifer:  AWS is a very different workplace than probably any other company you worked at before. Being adaptive to change and always demonstrating the learn and be curious attitude in order to serve our customers will help you a great deal in earning trust both internally and externally. Also, asking for feedback often, owning your tasks and initiatives and learning from talented, experienced people around the organization will help you deliver results and grow professionally.

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Jennifer:  Dynamic, Intense, Rewarding.

HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?

Jennifer:  I enjoy all types of creative activities (drawing, painting, and singing) as well as learning new languages (this year I successfully passed my C1 certification in Spanish and would like to learn a seventh language next year). Also, I enjoy cooking, HIIT workouts and reading widely around topics, especially when it comes to Technology and Psychology.
