Joseph is a Technical Account Manager based in Berlin, Germany. He joined AWS in September, 2019.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role?
Joseph: I started my career as a Software Engineer/Consultant writing code and developing solutions for customers to solve their business problems. I was in love with solving customer challenges and would build solutions that streamlined them in the most seamless way. Before working at AWS, I was a customer of AWS; I noticed that AWS provided services to build solutions for any scale, and this is what attracted me. In my current role at AWS, I do exactly this; I help my customers use AWS services in the most efficient way as possible to build solutions that brings them business value.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Joseph: As a Technical Account Manager (TAM) at AWS, I support my customers in achieving their technical objectives (based on business outcomes) using best practices. I represent my customers inside AWS, translating their requirements to internal teams and working with specialists and service teams to find solutions. Along with fuelling and enabling their growth on AWS, I also look for ways to optimize and reduce their costs on AWS.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Joseph: As a TAM, one needs to have a good mix of technical and management skills and customer-obsession is the key. At AWS, I own my customer relationships and I don’t experience a hierarchy telling me what my decisions should be. There is true freedom and autonomy to do right by my customers.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Joseph: Almost every day I get to learn something new – ranging from something peculiar about the unique working culture, or a service I have never used before, to a newly launched service/feature that would benefit my customers! I am also involved in some side projects at work to improve existing mechanisms.
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Joseph: 1. Tweaking Dumbledore’s words, “Help will always be given at AWS (Hogwarts) to those who ask for it”. I have seen fellow Amazonians always willing to help and share knowledge/best practices – when in doubt, always reach out (and there are many ways to ask for it)!
2. We live and breathe our Leadership Principles at Amazon, and they are fundamental to everything we do at AWS.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Joseph: Learning, collaboration and networking.
HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?
Joseph: If I am not in front of a laptop listening to some music and writing some nifty script for my personal gain, I might be binge-watching some series on Netflix or exploring the Berlin neighbourhood with some friends.
HereAtAWS: Is there anything else you would like to add about your personal journey?
Joseph: About three years ago, I relocated from India to Germany, and have moved around within Germany since then. It has been an interesting experience with a lot of learning, not only professionally, but also on a personal front. For example, since I started my career in 2011, I had never taken a break from work or travelled around the world. I travelled to 10 countries over the past three years, and in 2019, I took a break from work for nearly two and a half months.
