Laura joined AWS in 2017 as a Solutions Architect. She is currently based in London, UK.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Laura: I was the second person hired into the AWS Colombian office. It was a tremendous opportunity to be a part of a new office built from the ground up. I joined as a Solutions Architect and I had the chance to help customers from different industries and different sizes to adopt AWS Cloud. For personal reasons I moved to the UK SA team one year ago and it’s been a great experience to join a big team full of people from around the world.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Laura: I worked for the Middle Size Enterprise team in the UK. I have worked with customers in industries like publishing, media & entertainment and financial services, helping them to be well architected, with applications that are cost-effective, performant, resilient and secured.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Laura: I came from an infrastructure/ networking background, I knew lot about the hardware inside an on-prem data center, but not much about programming, application development nor analytics. AWS has empowered me to learn about so many new technologies. As a Solutions Architect, you need to have a holistic view of different technologies.
Once I joined AWS, I was hit by the rapid pace of things happening here, so one of the soft skills I appreciate and learnt during my time here was being able to adapt to changes and being able to prioritise.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?
Laura: Many! From the technical side, I have learnt a lot about application development, from CICD, micro-services, to developing in python. Also, to my surprise, I discovered that public speaking is something I was good at and I truly enjoyed.
HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?
Laura: Inclusion and Diversity are priority topics for me. I joined the AWS I&D ambassador programme, here I run trainings to bring internal awareness about these topics. I am also a GetIT ambassador, I work with two schools to encourage girls to pursue technical careers in the future. I am also mentoring a re/Start girl that wants to move from the fulfilment associate role to a career in technology.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Laura: Working with the latest technology, being in one of the most innovative companies in the world, and being able to wear so many different hats like Solutions Architect, Mentor, I&D/ GetIT ambassador and public speaker!
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Laura: AWS is a great place and (probably) super different than any other company you worked at before. Embrace change quickly, learn and be curious about other people, roles and organizations, and be humble.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Laura: Busy, learning, fun.
HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?
Laura: I am learning to play Piano and I am also learning German. I enjoy cooking a lot and I am a BIG fan of Crossfit or any tough HIIT.
