Meet Marcantonio, Solutions Architect

Marcantonio is a Solutions Architect based in Zurich, Switzerland. He joined AWS in January, 2021.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Marcantonio:  I had been running my own consulting company successfully for an almost uninterrupted seven years when I got contacted by an AWS recruiter for a chat. I did not really plan on going internal again, but it definitely sparked my interest, because she was able to share first-hand information about what it’s like working for AWS, and I respected this a lot. AWS was offering the kind of career growth which I would not be able to follow if I had continued working for myself.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Marcantonio:  I’m a Solutions Architect and I help our customers get the most value out of their cloud investments, which I find to be a very rewarding activity.

HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Marcantonio:  On the technical side, a broad understanding of the mechanics that are at play in the cloud is important. As a person, it’s paramount to be able to gain trust with customers.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?

Marcantonio:  My cloud experience was limited, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear that AWS provided a three-month onboarding period to make sure I get up to speed with the AWS cloud.

HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?

Marcantonio:  My job is educating customers about the benefits of cloud computing, and part of this is the positive effect cloud computing has on customers’ carbon footprint, which is a really good thing.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Marcantonio: Working with people who are without exception very talented.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Marcantonio:   Mentorship really helps in life, and I like that this principle is put into action at various places here at AWS.

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Marcantonio: Flexible, meaningful and intense!

HereAtAWS: Is there anything else you would like to add about your personal journey?

Marcantonio:  The conversations with my recruiter were very enjoyable, the style of how AWS communicates is a real pleasure. Even though my interview was tough, it was something I have never experienced before. Never have I been treated with this much respect during an interview process. There was not an ounce of attitude or swaggering by the interviewers regardless of their position in the company. I felt like I got the opportunity to put myself in the best light during the interview and talking about what I can do great, not what I’m lacking.
