Meet Marco, Practice Manager - Emerging Technologies and Intelligence Platform,

Marco is a Practice Manager - Emerging Technologies and Intelligence Platform, based in Zurich, Switzerland. He joined AWS in September, 2019.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Marco: I'm a Practice Manager – Emergent Technologies and Intelligence Platform with AWS Professional Services, based in the Zurich office. I joined AWS in September 2019 as a Senior Data Scientist with the AI/ML Global Special Practice team. Then I moved to the Shared Delivered Team in June 2020 for my current role as Practice Manager, leading a multi-disciplinary team to deliver customer business outcomes enabled by innovative technologies like AI/ML, Data & Analytics, IoT, HPC and Robotics.

Prior to AWS, I worked for I wide range of research centers and global companies, spanning multiple industry vertical from defence & security, manufacturing and railway systems to energy, robotics and industrial automation.

I have a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Connecticut, USA where I conducted research in information processing for Bayesian statistical inference, data compression; repeated significance testing, underwater sonar tracking, multi-target tracking, stochastic resonance in sequential detectors and several other technology-related issues.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Marco: To give you a concrete example, we helped a customer reimagine fuel stations with machine learning and IoT. That’s just one example of thousands of enterprises we help create new revenue streams, improve operational efficiency and reduce business risks.

We deliver innovative solutions that unlock value from data at an enterprise scale, integrating emerging technologies and platforms. To execute on our vision, we also form external partnerships to ensure the speed and broad view required by these fast-moving technologies.

HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Marco: As Practice Manager, I am expected to be a talent multiplier. Someone with the ability to hire, develop, coach and bring out the best in each of my team members so they can innovate on behalf of customers.

As a leader, I have to re-imagine my role around helping others grow. In order to do that I need to continuously build muscle in the emotional intelligence arena. Identifying my feelings and those of others, asking others for perspectives, learning from negative feedback, observing and asking questions, those are just some ways to increase self-awareness, emotional self-management, empathy and social skills.

Keeping up with the latest technology trends is also very important to be an effective leader. My teammates are more likely to trust me if they believe I have a strong technical know-how and the experience to make good calls about the team’s strategy.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?

Marco: As a leader I need to continuously embark on learning paths that include videos, articles and tools to help me do my job in the most effective and efficient way.

I am constantly building new technical skills through AWS certifications, writing AWS blogs, joining workshops, attending conferences. Interacting with my leadership team, my mentor and other different stakeholders within AWS also helps me lead through complexity, embrace the uncertainty, empower my team and deliver results through others.

HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?

Marco: We are helping a large multinational medicine company that produce therapeutics used by nearly 1 billion patients to re-imagine its manufacturing and supply chain with the ultimate goal of delivering value to patients receiving their therapies. This transformation roadmap will enable a future where personalised treatments can be developed and manufactured faster, with higher quality, lower costs, and delivered on schedule.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Marco: Jeff Immelt, the ex-CEO of GE used to say:” If you went to bed last night as an industrial company, you're going to wake up today as a software and analytics company”. I like to see myself as Morpheus (the ancient Greek god associated with the sleep and dreams) guiding my team in this challenging and exciting journey that will enable traditional enterprises to become digital companies that are more efficient, more agile, more profitable and more sustainable.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Marco: Dive deep into the Amazon Leadership Principles. They are a source of inspiration and drivers for a successful career at AWS.

Besides that, my personal tenets are:

• Be always inspired by curiosity: Never stop building new skills.

• See the world with the lenses of Mathematics: The world will look more beautiful.

• The Greek philosopher Sokrates once said:” I know that I know nothing”. Be willing to unlearn the past, if necessary, to succeed in the future

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Marco: I will use the three I’s:

Innovation: Innovating on behalf of the customers is giving me the unique opportunity to live in the future, and influence what the future looks like.

Integrity: I work with trust, transparency and honesty. At AWS we work with integrity in everything we do, and embody this principle when working with customers and partners.

Identity: Our mission is to be Earth's most customer-centric company: I am amazed by observing how my “modus operandi” is constantly influenced by Amazon’s mission.

HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?

Marco: Teasing my brain with mathematics, reading books, playing tennis, making Neapolitan pizza, and enjoy watching my family grow.
