Meet Maria, Data Center Security Manager

Maria joined AWS in 2019 as a Data Center Security Manager, based in Vasteras, Sweden.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Maria: I was looking for a change, a big change. I was looking to meet new people in a new environment, and I did it! Even though I had 17 years’ experience in physical security, the role at AWS was about starting a new adventure, building a new mind set and driving customer obsession to a new level. “Think Big” is the Leadership Principle that defines every day at AWS.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Maria: Every customer of AWS is my customer. Every day we create a secure environment for everyone who uses the AWS cloud around the world.

HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Maria: Communication skills are key – to be able to use the right language on different levels with different teams and for different purposes; whether that be training, motivation, or raising awareness.

In terms of technical skills, I need a deep knowledge of security systems as they are constantly developing.

HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?

Maria: I am a volunteer for InCommunities activities. I am always open to anything new and look forward to what the future will bring.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Maria: The most exciting part of my job that that every day is a new day with new challenges, new questions, and new possibilities.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Maria: The sky is the limit. Be open to learn something new every day, develop yourself, and find a way to make a difference for your customers.

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Maria: Ownership, fun, accountability.

HereAtAWS: Do you have any needs or commitment that require flexibility in your role?

Maria: I am used to having to find the correct balance between my work and personal time, and I prioritise things based on the need. I am not a parent, but I always find the time for an online bedtime story for my niece.

HereAtAWS: Is there anything else you would like to add about your personal journey?

Maria: I am really happy with the decision I made a year ago. AWS is a company where all of us are appreciated and where we have the amazing opportunity to create our own world.
