Marwa is a Software Development Manager based in Berlin, She joined AWS in April, 2020.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Marwa: I studied computer science in Egypt (my home country) and since my graduation have worked in software engineering. I started my early career as a Junior Developer for a medical solution software house, building software to integrate with medical equipment and keep track of patients’ medical records. Then I moved to the Egyptian taxes authority and spent six years there. After that, I spent 10 years in the telecommunications domain, which is a very interesting industry. I loved it so much, building customer relationship management and orders fulfilment and orchestration platforms, I grew up in this company and I have been leading teams since 2012.
In 2019, I decided to pursue my dreams and explore more challenges outside my comfort zone. I moved to Berlin and joined an international e-commerce company.
During my journey I was inspired by the Amazon Leadership Principles and I found that was applying most of them in my daily work years before I even considered joining the company, so when I did join AWS it was a dream come true for me.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Marwa: I’m one of the SDMs in the AWS Design System team, we are building code, design tools and resources that simplify our internal customers' work, as well as human interface guidelines that ensure consistent and predictable experiences at scale for the external user.
Whether our customer is a business owner, developer, or designer, we help them delight their customers, design and build more quickly, and achieve their goals.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Marwa: My experience before AWS was in backend technologies, and now I’m in a frontend team. That transition required me learn more about frontend technologies and the UX domain.
HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?
Marwa: As a Design System, our main mission is to help each team achieve accessibility compliance by offering guidance and resources to meet a wide set of recommendations for making web content accessible.
We want to provide our internal customers with the building blocks that will allow them to design and create an accessible interface. From my point of view, it’s positively impacting the society by making AWS interfaces inclusive, which means usable and accessible for everyone.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
The continuous learning. Every day I’m enhancing my own knowledge with interesting information and I also love the inclusive culture that runs through the team and AWS as a whole.
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Marwa: Understand the Leadership Principles and live by them! As a side note: the Leadership Principles are extremely helpful on a personal level too, and they can be applied in many different aspects of life.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Marwa: Learning. Fun. Inclusion.
HereAtAWS: Do you have any needs or commitment that require flexibility in your role?
Marwa: I’m a mother of two kids, and this requires flexibility sometimes, a lot of things might happen, sickness, school parents’ meetings and sport events. However, during my term at AWS so far, I have never faced a situation where my manager or my team were not flexible enough to understand a family commitment.
