Meet Matilde, Start-up Account Manager

Matilde is an AWS Start-up Account Manager based in Lisbon, Portugal. She joined AWS in May, 2020.

HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

MatildeI have an engineering and management background and I always wanted to join a big tech company, so I started my career at Amazon in Paris in 2014, where I initially joined the Retail side of the business. This experience was key for me to build my foundation at Amazon, focusing on really understanding the work culture and embodying the Leadership Principles. Two years later, I decided to try something new and landed a role in London with Prime Video, which was really a start-up within a very big organization. It was amazing to work with best-in-class product, engineering and operational teams to launch a new business in Europe and see it come to life. More recently, I decided to move closer to home in Lisbon, and take on a role at AWS; a part of Amazon I have been following for some years. I am now closer than ever to my entrepreneurial/tech roots, working as an Account Manager for Start-ups here in Portugal.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

MatildeMy role consists of accompanying start-ups based in Portugal, who are already AWS customers, throughout their journey with AWS and Amazon. Be it through helping them solve complex challenges by putting them in contact with the right people, or promoting the development of new features and technologies to support them, start-ups are incredibly knowledgeable about AWS services and use our services in the most innovative ways. It is my role to understand their challenges and remove any obstacles so their business can thrive.

HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?

MatildeYou need to be passionate about customers and their stories, do your research and be prepared to listen, while also anticipating questions. There are many types of account managers, with different levels of expertise in our technology, but one thing we all have in common is that we are incredibly resourceful and have a constant urge to learn more, to challenge the status quo and ourselves. It’s important to be comfortable with high-level conversations around AWS technology, and there are many resources internally to ensure this is possible.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?

MatildeYes! It’s always Day One at AWS and we are constantly learning about the latest technologies available. I was recently certified as Cloud Practitioner, which is a recommended as part of your on-boarding as an account manager, and plan to continue my certification further. As per soft skills, I participated in a few sessions around executive conversations, which have really helped me build my confidence when leading meetings with customers.

HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?

MatildeStart-ups are trying to solve modern day problems, and I always find it fascinating to speak to the entrepreneurs behind them. Whenever AWS technology can deliver best-in-class service to the start-ups I work with, I know society will benefit directly or indirectly. Some examples include start-ups supporting small and medium businesses to quickly build their brands online, giving developers tools to review code more efficiently or helping students find accommodation while they are abroad.

HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?

MatildeYes, I provide mentoring to other Amazonians on career development, career transitions, internal transfers or moving abroad.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

MatildeThe most exciting part of my job is without a doubt connecting with start-ups and solving complex problems alongside them.

HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

MatildeMy advice would be to take full advantage of the learning resources available and carve out time to do it on a weekly basis, because both you and your customers will benefit from it in the long term.

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

MatildeFascinating, Fast-paced, Enriching.

HereAtAWS: Do you have any needs or commitment that require flexibility in your role?

MatildeYes, I am a new mother of a one-year-old boy, so juggling work and parenting is something I am discovering at the moment. It has actually been easier to manage than expected, since working from home means no commute involved – and no time in traffic means more family time!

HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?

MatildeI am passionate about content i.e. film and TV series, and therefore my time at Prime Video has definitely further enhanced it. Otherwise, I like to learn new languages – I speak English, Portuguese and French fluently, and I am working on my Spanish and Italian. I have become seriously interested in all things sustainability and dream of building an energy-efficient home. I love living in big cities, and taking breaks by the ocean.
