Meet Nemanja, Software Development Engineer

Nemanja is a Software Development Engineer working on the Amazon Redshift team at AWS in Berlin.

HereatAWS: Hi Nemanja, tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?

Nemanja: I moved to Berlin in 2014 to work on distributed storage systems, networking layer, and standard library (in D programming language!) for an online advertising company. I absolutely fell in love with Berlin, so it was a nice coincidence that AWS had open positions in a similar field (distributed databases) in my city. I may have moved for a role at AWS. Thankfully, I don’t have to and I have the best of both worlds!

HereatAWS: Can you explain your role; who your customers are, and how you help them?

Nemanja: I work on adding the spatial functionality to Amazon Redshift. This means my customers could really be all Redshift customers.

HereatAWS: What skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Nemanja: One, you need to be good engineer. But that is the minimum requirement. Outside of the programming language you need strong writing and communication skills, as well as system design skills and an ability to be able to envisage the future! It sounds like a lot but you’re never alone at AWS, you need help? It’s all around you!

HereatAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?

Nemanja: I am a representative of Amazon at ISO C++ committee. I meet the C++ experts around the world, attend telecoms, and I try to bridge the two worlds together.

HereatAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Nemanja: Every day is full of meaningful work and having fun doing it. I am at the stage where most of my passion projects take place at my workplace!

HereatAWS: What’s the most challenging part of your job?

Nemanja: Getting out of the ‘comfort zone’. There are so many things in software that can be improved or built, and it’s very easy to be want to do everything at once, but then you can make yourself feel overwhelmed! Accepting that not everything can be changed immediately was probably the biggest discipline for me!

HereatAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?

Nemanja: Don’t think twice – join us! And when you do, seek the opportunities to make a change. You’re not here to solve the tickets, you’re here to make a change.

HereatAWS: What do you love to do outside work?

Nemanja: I enjoy reading novels and comic books, and if I have extra time, my favourite (and most expensive) hobby is building smart electronic devices to help agriculture!

HereatAWS: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Nemanja: A career is like life - It’s not about the final destination, it’s about the journey. AWS is a rollercoaster that you don’t want to miss! Join us on our ride!
