Meet Nicole, Employer Brand Intern

Nicole joined AWS in August 2020 as an Employer Brand Intern, based in London, United Kingdom

HereAtAWS: Why did you apply for an Internship at AWS?

Nicole: I am currently studying a Marketing degree at Nottingham Trent University and decided to complete a placement year to gain experience in the industry. I wanted to work for a globally recognised company, where I would have the chance to gain the best experience from branding specialists. The digital aspect of the role stood out to me along with the chance to take part in and help run recruitment events. I enjoy working alongside a variety of teams within AWS helping them to recruit the very best talent for their roles.

HereAtAWS: How did you hear about AWS Internships?

Nicole: I saw the role advertised on LinkedIn.

HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your role as an Intern?

Nicole: Being able to design and publish promotional material on digital and social channels and seeing how much impact that has on recruiting new talent. I also enjoy teaching teams how to use virtual communication platforms in order to live-stream events. I feel like I am really having an impact in the company.

HereAtAWS: What is your biggest takeaway from your internship here?

Nicole: Make the most of every day. Each day at AWS is different and I’ve met some amazing people along the way. Each week, I am excited to find out which projects I will be working on and who I will be working with. There are so many specialists in the field to learn from and everyone is more than happy to spend time teaching me new skills.

HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?

Nicole: As an Employer Brand intern, my internal customers are the Talent Acquisition team, whom I support by supplying branding materials that may help them achieve their recruitment goals. Externally, my customers are people who might be interested in a role at AWS, delivering them the best experience possible on their application journey, whether that is contributing to the execution of videos, designs, articles, brochures or events.

HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?

Nicole: Since starting my role I have had to learn how to use many new software tools for event management and talent management, and I have also upskilled in design platforms such as Photoshop. In terms of soft skills, I would say prioritisation. I have had to learn how to balance my calendar between meetings and executing all the interesting ideas that come out of those meetings.

HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?

Nicole: Challenging, Exciting, Inspiring.

HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?

Nicole: I am a keen field hockey player and currently play in the National League in the UK. I train four times a week and play a match every Saturday.

I also enjoy taking my golden retriever on long hikes round our local area.
