Ron joined AWS in September 2019 and is a Software Development Manager based in Tel Aviv, Israel.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Ron: After ten rewarding years leading software development teams in the healthcare industry, I came across a great opportunity. I joined CloudEndure, an Israeli start-up that was acquired by AWS a few months before I arrived. The exciting onboarding challenges that the group was facing, as well as the value it could bring to its customers was very appealing to me.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Ron: I am responsible for the development of a new native AWS service. We are developing a cloud-based recovery service that allows customers to use AWS as a recovery site that scales up or down based on business needs, without having to invest in recovery data centers and pay for idle resources.
Our service provides customers of any size, anywhere, with a consistent process to replicate and recover applications from physical/virtual/cloud-based sources, without the capital investments and operational pain involved with building recovery data centers or expanding to new regions.
As a software development manager, I am also responsible for the career development and professional growth of my team members.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Ron: In order to build a scalable, operational and secure service I need a deep technical knowledge of the AWS offerings, tools and best practices. I need a strong understanding of the deployment processes as well as project management tools. We are hiring a lot, so another key requirement of my role is to hire and develop the best!
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?
Ron: Sure! Our group consists of extremely experienced, creative and smart engineers and I learn new things all the time. Whether I’m facing a technical, project management or team management challenge I can learn from the experience of others.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Ron: For me the most exciting part is building a new highly scalable service that truly brings value to our customers. This is a rare opportunity. In addition, I get excited when facing new complex technical challenges, and collaborating with my peers until we find the optimal solution.
HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?
Ron: I love surfing and windsurfing. I started more than 25 years ago and haven’t stopped since.
Having our Tel Aviv office so close to the beach makes it super easy to go surfing in the morning before work!
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Ron: Collaborate with you team mates. You are about to join a set of extremely talented people. Make the most out of that.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Ron: Challenging, Rewarding, Creative
