Samir is a Database developer, based in Gdansk, Poland. He joined AWS in January.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Samir: Before joining AWS I was working in another outsource company as a DB Developer. Due to the pandemic, there was lack of projects and our project was closed. I have always been interested in working at the earth’s most customer-centric and data-driven company, and last year I saw a DB Developer vacancy posted on LinkedIn, and thought it was definitely for me. I relocated to Poland from the Czech Republic in January, 2021.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Samir: I am a Database developer in Database Migration Accelerator team. It is quite a challenging team, our customers are using on-premise databases. We help them migrate their infrastructure to AWS cloud, to reduce their costs and improves performance.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Samir: You have to deep dive into problems and be open to ask questions in your team. Database programming is the main skill need in our job, but as we work with so many customers, good communication skills are almost as important. Also, I have to mention that being a team player plays a key role.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?
Samir: Our team is like a start-up, there are a lot of new members for me to learn from and get to know every day. Customers are different, each of them are using different systems, we have to interact with them individually and understand their unique needs.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Samir: The most exciting part of my job is to help customers migrate their systems to cloud technology and see how it impacts customers in a positive way.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Samir: Challenging, multitasking and exciting.
