Sandra is an AWS Professional Services Graduate – Data Science, based in Stockholm. She joined AWS in September 2019.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Sandra: I was born and raised in Barcelona (Spain), but I moved to Sweden about four years ago, driven by the curiosity of living abroad. Sweden started to feel like home and I decided to study my Master’s degree in Machine Learning at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. After my Master’s degree, I was looking for an exciting opportunity to learn more about applying Machine Learning to real business cases, and this is how I ended up in the Graduate Program for Professional Services at AWS!
HereAtAWS:Can you explain your role; who your customers are, and how you help them?
Sandra: I help customers to solve business problems by implementing Machine Learning solutions on AWS. The role involves “Working Backwards” with the customer to address the business challenge, and implementing the right solution that will help them. My role is really hands-on and it requires learning every day.
HereAtAWS:What skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Sandra: Regarding technical skills, you definitely need to understand AWS, not just Machine Learning services. Although my speciality is Data Science, I am constantly learning about other AWS services closer to other specialities such as DevOps or Data Analytics. So if you like to challenge yourself, this is for sure the right role!
On the other side, the most important skills in starting a Professional Services position are included in the Leadership Principles at Amazon: “Learn and Be Curious”, “Bias for Action” and “Ownership”.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills for your role?
Sandra: Lots of skills! I am constantly increasing my set of skills and that is what I like the most! If you are willing to do it, there is always an opportunity to improve. For instance, during the first month, I was focused on understanding Amazon culture and learning the foundations of Architecting in AWS.
HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?
Sandra: Yes! I really enjoy participating in internal activities like “Knowledge Sharing” programs. There are so many opportunities like this. Not only do you expand your knowledge but it is one of the best ways to meet people!
HereAtAWS:What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Sandra: Diving deep into all the available technologies and resources, as well as the opportunity to constantly learn from all the smart people that you work with.
HereAtAWS:What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Sandra: Enjoy every opportunity to meet other Amazonians! The people you will work with is one of the best parts of this job.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Sandra: If I have to choose three words, I would say: Challenging, Passion and Learning.
HereAtAWS:Do you have any needs or commitment that require flexibility in your role?
Sandra: As I said, I am from Barcelona so I like visiting my family and friends when I have the opportunity. That is why I love to have some flexibility at work that allows me to be closer to them since I can sometimes work from there. My family is very important to me.
HereAtAWS: Is there anything else you would like to add about your personal journey?
Sandra: I would just add that moving from different backgrounds is fine! Before studying Machine Learning, I was really focused on Electronics and I still think that all the knowledge is helpful. One of the things I enjoy the most of working at AWS is working with people with different experiences, backgrounds and knowledge. In my opinion, diversity is always the best way to solve a problem.
