Sever is an Account Manager based in Bucharest, Romania. He joined AWS in September 2020.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Sever: Initially, I was part of the Small and Medium Businesses (SMB) team, responsible for supporting top SMB customers and growing our business in Romania, Greece, and Cyprus, and have transitioned afterwards to cover our strategic/Engage Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) in Central Eastern Europe.
Before joining AWS, I’ve worked in cybersecurity for one of the biggest on-prem infrastructure provider.
Although originally from Romania, over the last years I have been living in Czech Republic and Germany. Initially I’ve started working at AWS in Munich, but once the Bucharest office opened last year I moved back to Bucharest.
I moved from SMB to ISVs to drive complexity (complex customers and deals) and in the same time because Software is one of the biggest industry in CEE so there is a huge opportunity for me to make a change there.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Sever: As an Account Manager, I am directly managing the top ten ISVs in the region, helping them innovate, modernize their products, improve their stack of services and, at the same time, helping them expand and grow their revenue via co-sell motion with AWS, thus helping them grow their business.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Sever: There is no secret sauce, but being a good listener, having interest in technology and how the technology can be leveraged to improve and transform organizations the industry would help.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?
Sever: AWS is a highly innovative company and it is great to see from the inside, how our leadership team is delivering on the Learn and Be Curious leadership principle, and how the leadership team is creating a highly innovative environment.
HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?
Sever: We need more innovation for a better world. By helping customers build, launch new products and expand, I feel like I’m taking a very small part in shaping the future. At the same time, we collaborate with ISVs by organizing and running technical workshops at universities, making the partners’ technologies accessible to students or driving activities to help students grow their knowledge and/or careers.
HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?
Sever: I particularly enjoy mentoring new hires as part of their onboarding process, fast tracking it and helping them drive complex deal from the early days (currently mentoring three new hires).
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Sever: Being at the forefront of innovation and interacting with early adopters, creates around me an environment of innovation and accelerates growth. You always have to step up the game, learn and develop new skills and at the same time generate new ideas and new ways of managing customers.
HereAtAWS: What initially interested you in working for AWS?
Sever: Joining a highly innovative company was the main point and after speaking with the Amazonians during the interview process I was impressed by their Customer Obsession, how AWS works backwards from the customer and, how the culture is done in such a manner that this working backward from the customer is at the core of all employees.
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Sever: Take your time and leverage what drives you and the skills you have. Work backwards from your talents, skills and goals to realize the most ideal role for you. If you don’t know your talents, ask for feedback from your network.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Sever: Innovative, curiosity, challenging.
HereAtAWS: Do you have any needs or commitment that require flexibility in your role?
Sever: Currently I am doing an Executive Education program that is taking quite some time, having the flexibility at work has really helped me adapt to the learning path.
HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?
Sever: Outside of work, I love snowboarding, hiking, traveling and playing football.
HereAtAWS: Is there anything else you would like to add about your personal journey?
Sever: At the core I am a really curious person, so I like learning about new things and find new ways to innovate. Being part of such a company that drives the innovation in the world and being surrounded by extremely smart people is really motivating and rewarding, as this is challenging and pushing me to become a better version of myself.
