Shashika is the Marketing Lead for Sub-Saharan Africa based in Johannesburg, South Africa. She joined AWS in June 2018.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Shashika: I joined AWS two years ago. I came from a Telecommunications and Consulting background and what attracted me to AWS was a pure love for the brand. It’s refreshing that I get to live this brand day in and day out and get to connect millions of South Africans to AWS.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Shahika: I lead marketing for the commercial sector at AWS. I get to help customers across Sub-Saharan Africa to connect, collaborate and kick start their cloud adoption journey.
HereAtAWS:What kind of skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Shashika: Curiosity, tenacity, analytical skills, adaptability and the art of persuasion.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills for your role?
Shahika: Definitely resourcefulness – the ability to do something great with very little whilst making use of all tools available to make the most informed decisions and analysis. As frugality is one of our Leadership Principles, that drives us to find really creative solutions.
HereAtAWS:How would you say your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?
Shashika: Our work facilitates our customers transformation to the cloud and assists in reaching scale, agility and cost efficiencies. This in turn enables our customers to achieve service continuity, run mission critical services and deploy globally in minutes.
HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?
Shashika: Women@Amazon (W@A) is the global affinity group for women and allies. We are a supportive, inclusive community for both business and technical employees that strive to increase gender diversity at Amazon. Our mission is to make Amazon the premier global destination for female talent across all job functions. We focus on recruiting top female talent, reducing the gender leadership gap, and encouraging women in STEM fields.
HereAtAWS:What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Shashika: Definitely getting to exchange ideas with peers, and the ability to test concepts and raise the bar based on the outcomes.
HereAtAWS:What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Shashika: In my role, it’s never knowing what to expect. Even though this can be challenging at times it is also by far the most thrilling thing I get to throw myself into and solve.
HereAtAWS: Do you have any needs or commitment that require flexibility in your role?
Shashika: I am new to parenthood and AWS provides me with the flexibility to carry out my work as well as meet the growing needs of my six month old. It’s all up to me on how I manage this and it really works well for me.
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Shashika: There is no better place to learn and be curious. AWS will leave you with a skillset that you will be able to use throughout your life whether it’s in a personal or business capacity.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Shashika: Always Day 1.
HereAtAWS: What do you love to do outside work?
Shashika: I’m passionate about restoring old furniture and giving it a brand new facelift. Definitely soothing for the soul.
