Shireen is a Partner Development Manager – Healthcare, based in Dubai, UAE. She joined AWS in August 2020.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Shireen: Throughout my career journey, I have worked with various IT companies focused on supporting regional public sector entities. During these roles, my focus was to always understand their main business objectives, and how they could utilise technology to deliver value to their stakeholders. These relationships and interactions led to many collaborative efforts in supporting public sector customers’ digital transformation journey, and led me to develop a true passion towards the latest technology trends with Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at the forefront. I was both aware and extremely interested in the impressive inroads made by Amazon Web Services in this area, and when I got the opportunity to join, I was so excited and I couldn’t be happier to be part of the team.
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Shireen: I joined AWS as the Partner Development Manager for the Middle East and Africa region, focusing on partners in the Healthcare sector. My main objective is to support AWS’ healthcare partners in the region to collaboratively serve the healthcare sector to achieve their critical missions.
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Shireen: To be successful in my role, it is imperative that I have a clear understanding of the AWS Services, and simultaneously understand the healthcare partners’ offerings and solutions, to be able to support our partner ecosystem. My role requires me to enable the healthcare partner network by providing them with the required guidance to build a profitable business, while addressing the ongoing demands of delivering patient-centric solutions to our customers.
HereAtAWS: Have you had to learn any specific new skills (technical or soft) for your role?
Shireen: As part of my on-boarding process, I completed the Cloud Practitioner Certification (CPC), which provided me with the skills and knowledge of the AWS Cloud. CPC enabled me to have meaningful conversations with the AWS partners, and elevated my engagements with the partners. I am now well versed in AWS’ varied services and can map partner requirements to the myriad products offered.
HereAtAWS: How does your work with customers help to make a positive impact on society?
Shireen: Being in the healthcare sector puts impacting society positively squarely in the spotlight. My day-to-day focus is to enable healthcare partners to empower medical entities to meet their humanitarian goals. Using technology as an enabler, AWS is helping our partners to tackle some of the most difficult and important issues in today’s society, while ensuring a bright future for the next generations.
HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?
Shireen: I am part of the Families@Amazon affinity group. I am particularly interested in this group given its objective to advocate for policies that support making Amazon a great place to work. It is wonderful to be part of this as it focuses on sharing knowledge, encouraging career growth and improving community connections amongst families regardless of their unique needs.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Shireen: The most exciting part of my job is being a small part of the innovation that is taking place in the healthcare sector. Whether it is collaborating with the healthcare stakeholders to support their efforts to cope with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, or enabling researchers to utilize technology to create a healthier society. There is a nobility in helping governments help their citizen and residents to lead healthy lives, which makes this role more important than any job I have had in the past.
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Shireen: I would advise new joiners to focus on learning and gaining the knowledge required to be successful in your role as quickly as possible. AWS is unique in their approach to on-boarding new joiners, and providing all new employees the opportunity to educate themselves in the first few months. Learn and Be Curious is one of the Amazon Leadership Principles, and it is fascinating to see that these principles are lived and demonstrated by every employee of the company.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Shireen: Rewarding, Dynamic and Exciting.
HereAtAWS: Do you have any needs or commitment that require flexibility in your role?
Shireen: I am a mother to my twin girls, and like any other working parent, flexibility and time management are the core foundation of being both a successful parent and a successful professional. Many working Moms have a certain innate sense of guilt related to inability to focus fully on either career or family. I have found AWS’ culture has been designed to support a reasonable work life balance that allows me to be successful at both of these critical roles.
