Szrgyan is an Engineering Operations Technician based in Spain. He joined AWS in January, 2021.
HereAtAWS: Tell us about your career journey. What brought you to your current role at AWS?
Szrgyan : Before AWS I was self-employed, in my family business. I had couple of employees working with me on different projects in the Electrical and HVAC industry. Business was going well, but during the Covid-19 pandemic, I was looking for the security that working at a large global company offered. I also wanted the opportunity to see and learn from different areas of the industry.
For this role I had to move to a different region in Spain. But that was not a big problem to me, as I lived in Malta for five years, and before that in Serbia (my home country).
HereAtAWS: Can you explain in simple terms: your role, who your customers are, and how you help them?
Szrgyan : As an EOT my role is to make sure that the data center is up and running, it is on me to check and maintain all electrical and cooling systems. My customers are basically all of the people who use the internet. If you’re watching a movie on a streaming platform, there’s a good chance I helped make that happen!
HereAtAWS: What technical and/or soft skills do you need to succeed in your role?
Szrgyan : First of all, you need to be open-minded, willing to learn and immerse yourself in AWS’ culture. Specifically in my role, electrical and mechanical backgrounds come as a big advantage!
HereAtAWS: At work, are you involved in any activities outside of your role?
Szrgyan : I am involved in a mentoring program where we help new joiners onboard from a technical and culture perspective.
HereAtAWS: What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Szrgyan : By far the most exciting part is that I am able to operate state-of-the-art equipment and technology.
HereAtAWS: What advice would you give people joining AWS?
Szrgyan : Prepare for lots of work, fun and a good time with Amazonians.
HereAtAWS: What three words would you use to describe workdays at AWS?
Szrgyan : Development, success, good times! (okay that’s four!).
